AYODHYA, NOVEMBER 9, 2019: Today is a historic day in the decades-long dispute of Ayodhya land. The Supreme Court will pronounce its verdict in the politically sensitive case of Ram Janmbhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute in Ayodhya on Saturday.

The decision was taken by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi in consultation with four other judges deciding the case. Other members of the bench are Justices S A Bobde, D Y Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer.

A Constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi is likely to pronounce judgment at 10:30 am. The official website of the Supreme Court notified on late Friday evening.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to maintain peace, unity after the SC verdict. In a Tweet PM Modi said, "Whatever decision SC delivers in #Ayodhya case, it'll not be a victory or defeat of anyone. My appeal to the countrymen is that it should be the priority of all of us that this decision should further strengthen the great tradition of peace, unity & goodwill of India.”

To date, there was no clarity on the date of the verdict on Ayodhya's case, other than the fact that the judgment would be delivered before Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi's retirement on November 17.

After taking note of the report of the three-member panel, comprising Justice FMI Kallifulla, spiritual guru and founder of the Art of Living Foundation Sri Sri Ravishankar and senior advocate and renowned mediator Sriram Panchu, that mediation proceedings, which went on for about four months, did not result in any final settlement and it had to decide the matter pending before it.

Finally, the five-judge constitution bench of Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had reserved the judgment on October 16 after a marathon 40 days day-to-day hearing which was started on August 6.

The high-voltage hearing in the dispute involving 2.77 acres of land is the second-longest after the landmark Keshvanand Bharti case in 1973 during which the proceedings for propounding the doctrine of basic structure of the Constitution continued for 68 days.

The hearing on the validity of the Aadhaar scheme lasted for 38 days in the top court, which came into existence in 1950.

Hours before announcing the date of verdict, the CJI in the pre-noon held a meeting with Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Rajendra Kumar Tiwari and DGP Om Prakash Singh who apprised him about the security arrangements made to maintain law and order in the state.

Both DGP and Chief Secretary apprised him of the security arrangements made in Ayodhya and whole of the state in the UP.

"Massive security arrangements have been put in place in UP to ensure that there is no backlash after the verdict. From the deployment of several Drone Cameras to a strict vigil on social media, the UP police have tightened security to face any situation in the pilgrim town, ahead of the Supreme Court verdict on the Ayodhya dispute," DGP Om Prakash Singh said, talking to NDTV.

"All security arrangements were in place and directions had been issued to all district police chiefs, DIG ranges and ADG zones to identify people who were earlier booked for posting objectionable or communal content on social media," UP DGP Om Prakash Singh said.

“We are keeping a tab on all those elements who were earlier booked for posting objectionable remarks on social media. Police are keeping a watch and there is surveillance on all suspicious elements," he appraised Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.

“Intelligence machinery has been geared up and under no circumstances will anyone be allowed to disrupt law and order," he informed CJI.

Over 20,000 Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in Ayodhya including Special task Force, Anti-Terrorist Force etc. The almost total strength of 2.5 Lakhs Police force in UP have been put on high alert and strict vigil is being maintained especially in the communally sensitive districts. Vigil on the Indo-Nepal border adjoining UP has also been increased. Drone Technology has been deployed with the help of IIT Kanpur.

Meanwhile, the District police of Ayodhya have asked to identify people previously booked for posting objectionable content online.

“Total 76 Cases have been registered and  42 people have been arrested so far for posting objectionable,  fake or communally sensitive messages, images and videos on Social Media in UP,”  he said.

“We are keeping a strict watch on Social Media posts through 3 Lakhs Digital Volunteers deployed all over the state. We can also consider closing the Internet or Mobile Network if required, DGP OP Singh said.
